Ray’s injuries are checked over, the men I knocked out earlier in the night are prepped to be taken down to the station, and finally, I meet Inspector Marsha Grayheart.

Now we’re getting somewhere.

I greet her and offer my hand, but she shuns it.

“Claire Johnson, I’ve seen you on the news. Big business. Hot stuff, aren’t you?” Her eyes cast over me coolly.

<I guess she won’t be asking me for an autograph.>

<She obviously has bad taste,> Annabelle says.

I give a noncommittal shrug and the inspector continues. “Mind if I ask you a few questions about what happened here? These men say you assaulted them.”

“They assaulted me first. Plus, they kidnapped my friend. They would’ve killed me, and him, if they’d gotten the chance.”

The inspector’s face doesn’t shift. I’m beginning to think she might be made of plastic.

She stares me down, and I’m the one who blinks.

I cross my arms and shift my weight from leg to leg. “I’d like to show you where we’re holding Marco Del Toro. Not only is he stealing valuable tech on French soil, but he lured me here, and his goons tried to kill me. Maybe he’s the one you should be questioning.”

Marsha’s expression doesn’t give anything away. “I’ll check into your story. For now, I ask that you stay put and not leave the scene. We’ll need a full statement taken at the station, and until this is sorted out, as a show of good faith, we’d like to secure your space shuttle.”

My eyes bug, and Annabelle sighs.

<I should’ve known this was coming.>

“We could have the shuttle return to Andromeda Station under autopilot,” I offer.

“Then you could just recall it whenever you want, no?”

“I could give you my word.”

Marsha laughs with a broad smile. “You know, I want to say that’s fine, but unfortunately, I can’t. Someone who can take off into space is a huge flight risk. If you could have it sent back to the city center, it can stay on the helipad near the station.”

<Is she going to lock it up with a metal boot?> Annabelle’s anger is palatable.

<Annabelle….>

<We could still recall it whenever we want,> she says with a bitter edge to her voice. <You know that.>

<Let’s just comply and not give her more reasons to distrust us.>

<Good point. Guess I am a little bit of a control freak,> Annabelle grumbles.

<A little?> Out loud, I say, “It’ll be done.”

“Merci! Now, let me do my job. You wait here for us to finish. Don’t leave until you get the go-ahead from my sergeant.”

She walks away, and my gaze follows after her.

That could’ve gone better.

I glance across the way where Ray sits on the edge of the ambulance. He’s wrapped in a blanket and sipping a cup of coffee.

His eyes meet mine, and a shiver races through me.

Of course, it could’ve gone worse. So much worse.
